The gel from the aloe vera plant is packed full of goodness, containing an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. As an anti-inflammatory, aloe vera gel can be used to treat sunburn and various minor skin conditions, and the gel can also be a beneficial addition to your hair routine.
Aloe vera gel is one of the main components of aloe vera juice, which has been known to lower blood sugar, reduce dental plaque and ease heartburn symptoms. Some even suggest that drinking aloe vera juice can boost the immune system due to its high vitamin content and hydrating effect.

How to Prepare Aloe Vera Juice: Sourcing the Gel
Aloe vera juice is made from aloe vera gel, which is the white gooey substance you will find on the very inside of a ripe aloe vera leaf.
The skin of the aloe leaves, as well as the yellow-colored resin just beneath the skin, will not be used for making aloe vera juice. The yellow-colored resin actually contains something called aloe latex, which is thought to give aloe vera its anti-microbial effects, but has also been linked to digestive problems if ingested regularly. So it is only the white-colored gel in the middle of the leaf you will need to make your aloe juice.
To source some of this gel, you will first need to find a fresh aloe vera plant, which you can usually pick up at your local gardening center, florist or DIY store. Once you’ve got your hands on a plant, you’re ready to start sourcing your gel. Here’s how to do it:
Begin by Washing Your Hands
We all know how important this is these days, so begin by washing your hands. This precaution will prevent the gel, and you, from becoming infected!
Choose an Aloe Leaf (Or Leaves)
When choosing a leaf from your aloe plant, it’s important that you go for a ripe one that’s full of nutrients and ready for harvesting. Ripe leaves are usually the larger, thicker ones, and will be deep green in color.
Depending on how much aloe vera juice you’re looking to make, you might want to harvest a number of leaves. On average, 2-3 leaves should give you at least a half cup of gel, which is plenty for about 4 servings of aloe vera juice.
Once you’ve chosen your aloe leaves, just snip them off with a pair of sharp scissors as close to the base of the plant as possible, and you’re good to go.
Drain out the Yellow-Colored Resin
After rinsing the aloe leaves under running water and drying, place the leaves cut-side-down in a tall glass for about 10 minutes to drain out the yellow resin.
Cut off the Sides
With the resin gone, place the aloe leaves on a cutting board and carefully remove the spiky sides with a sharp knife. This removal will allow some access to the gooey gel inside.
Peel off the Hard Green Skin
To gain full access to the white gel, run a vegetable peeler down the length of each leaf on one side. This scraping will remove the hard green exterior of the leaf, and leave the white gooey gel exposed and ready for harvesting.
Scoop out the Gel
With the gel fully accessible now, simply take a spoon and scoop all the gel out of the leaf.
It’s important to make sure before using the gel that it is a clear, whitish color through and through, and does not contain any yellow or green bits. These yellow or green bits are likely to be leftover resin that wasn’t drained properly, and can be toxic. If you see any in your gel, remove them before you use the gel.
If you’re ready to start making your homemade aloe vera juice right away, you can scoop the clear white gel straight into a blender or juicer. For later use, just scoop the gel into a sterilized container and store in the refrigerator where it should stay fresh for up to 10 days. How to Make Aloe Vera Juice
With your fresh aloe vera gel primed and ready, the process of how to juice aloe vera is actually quite a simple one.
Just place your desired portion of aloe vera gel into a blender or juicer — you might want to start with about two tablespoons — along with some filtered water. The exact ratio of water to aloe vera is up to you, depending on how thick you would like the juice or drink to be, but we would recommend a ratio of about 16:1 in favor of water.
With your water/aloe vera mix in the blender, just blend on a low setting for about 4-5 minutes, and your juice will be ready to go!

How to Spruce Up Your Aloe Juice
The simple mixture of aloe vera gel and water can be very refreshing, but it’s not for everybody. Many would much prefer an aloe vera drink with a bit more taste to it.
To add a little flavor to your juice, you could try adding in a squeeze of lemon and lime, or maybe even a dash of orange, or ginger. This addition should help to add a bit of zip to your juice while maintaining all of its health benefits.

The ratio of aloe to watermelon here is really up to you, but again, a ratio of about 16:1 in favor of the watermelon should make for a nice refreshing drink.

Aloe Vera with Honey

To do this, mix your aloe vera gel with pure organic honey in a blender for two or three minutes on a low setting. The ideal mixture here is one part aloe to one part honey.
You can then store this mixture in your refrigerator, or in a cool dark place, and have a spoonful two or three times a day for a healthy, vitamin boost.
Adding Aloe Vera to Smoothies
If you’re already a fan of making smoothies, it’s very easy to add aloe to any of your favorite smoothie recipes. Just go about making your preferred smoothie as normal, and when the time comes to blend up all the ingredients, chuck in a little aloe vera gel on top.
